The question I get when I tell people I’m an End-of-Life Doula AND I started a club for everyone still alive called the Pre-Dead Social Club is, WHY?
I believe…
that death is a life skill
that we really DO want to talk to about what matters most as it relates to our mortality, but we don’t know who to talk to
the more practice we get die-a-loguing about death and dying the better prepared we’ll be when that time comes
because we’ve made death a “medical event” vs. a “life event” we’ve lost our footing and confuse “quantity of life” to be synonymous with “quality of life”
our medical professionals are exhausted in part because they feel their patients don’t want to talk about death, as a natural course of living
the vast majority of our medical professionals don’t receive impactful training to help us navigate end-of-life
every one of us will be a caregiver (now or some day soon) and we are woefully underprepared for this role
as individuals, as family members, as members of communities, as people who WILL die someday - we can do better, we need each other and have a lot to share
in meeting people where they are at
I have no doubt we have a lot in common and we have a lot to learn from each other. We all are somewhere between thriving and dying and what supports our thriving shifts with each of our life chapters.
